Alleged attack: Police say it’s clash between military, Bello’s unruly motorcade

The police command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) says it has begun an investigation into the alleged attack on Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi on Sunday, revealing that Mr Bello’s motorcade’s unruliness was responsible for a clash with military men at a checkpoint.

FCT police commissioner Haruna Garba said this in an interview on Sunday in Abuja.
Reacting to a statement by Kogi information commissioner Kingsley Fanwo’s claim of an alleged assassination attempt on Mr Bello, he said, “Preliminary investigation showed that the alleged attack was a result of an altercation between the military personnel at a checkpoint and the governor’s motorcade. An investigation revealed that the crisis followed the refusal of the governor’s motorcade to stop at the military checkpoint.”

Mr Fanwo alleged an assassination attempt on the governor a few kilometres from Abuja. He said the governor was on his way to an official engagement.
The Kogi governor refuted the claim of his commissioner.
Mr Fanwo said the attack occurred at about 4:oo p.m. on Sunday, adding that the attackers were dressed in military uniforms. He alleged that the attackers waylaid the governor’s motorcade and fired sporadically at his vehicle and other vehicles in the convoy.
“It took the swift intervention of the security personnel attached to the governor to foil the satanic plans of the unknown soldiers. The attacks were at three different points, the last barricade being around Kwali Federal Capital Territory at about 4:20 p.m.,” said Mr Fanwo.
