Flour Milling Association of Nigeria, FMAN, says it has trained over 35,000 Northern farmers on wheat production as part of its commitments to developing Nigeria’s wheat value chain.
FMAN made the disclosure in its October edition of newsletter titled “Driving the Attainment of Wheat Self-Sufficiency in Nigeria: A Flour Milling Association of Nigeria Newsletter” copied to DAILY COMMERCE on Wednesday.
Highlighting significant feats achieved in the last wheat farming season, FMAN noted that it had released high-yielding varieties, describing it as a game-changer for wheat production in Nigeria.
Further, FMAN said it had launched a customized data management software and strengthening partnership between farmers and mechanized partners in the country.
The Association added that it had supported the National Agricultural Seed Council, NASC, in the launch of its world seed testing laboratory facility just as it continued to champion the agenda for the inclusion of female farmers and financial literacy for the stakeholders.
Unveiling new opportunities for Northern wheat farmers in the 2023/2024 season, FMAN said preparations have started with the rigorous training of field teams and farmers.
The association said: “This season, we will further amplify the technologies of wheat production across 4,000 hectares in over 13 Northern States while servicing over 5,000 farmers on our outgrower program.
“We also continue to indirectly provide over 10,000 jobs across our areas of operations…talk about people empowerment.”
The 2023/2024 wheat farming season, FMAN said, “Brings a different twist as farmers in their hundreds transition from our outgrower program to stand on their own, creating room for more farmers to benefit”.
DAILY COMMERCE reports Minister of Agriculture Abubakar Kyari, as saying the Federal Government will give out 50 per cent subsidy to wheat farmers in the upcoming dry season farming to ensure massive production of the grain in the country.
Mr Kyari spoke to newsmen shortly after inspecting assorted seed wheat productions in Kano recetly.
“We are fully committed towards massive wheat production in the upcoming dry seasons farming for local and foreign export actions,” he said.
