Senator Godswill Akpabio, a former Governor of Akwa, has defeated his closest contender, Senator Abdul’aziz Yari, with 55 votes to emerge the President of the 10th Senate.
Yari, a former governor of Zamfara State, and Akpabio are both from the ruling party All Progressive Congress, APC.
Also, Senator Jibrin Barau, representing Kano North Federal Constituency, emerged the deputy senate President of the 10th National Assembly.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and state governors threw their weights behind Senator Akpabio’s candidature for Senate President in a bid to strike balance along ethnic and religious lines in the national politics.
