Gwarzo denies promising free eye surgery, tasks Journalists on credibility

The Kano State Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has denied making any financial commitment for eye surgery of 52 indigent patients.

Gwarzo, who described the report in some quarters of the media as misleading and unfounded, tasked Journalists in Kano to uphold credibility and endeavour to verify evidence before going to press.

A statement from Deputy Governor’s Press Secretary, Ibrahim Garba Shuaibu, frowned at a Kano based news platform for accusing Gwarzo of failing to honour his promise to sponsore 52 indigent patients for eye surgery.

He said his principal never made any such promise as claimed by the reporter who quoted a tweet on September 9, 2023, on an unverified X handle formerly Twitter of the Deputy Governor.

Speaking to DAILY COMMERCE, Shuaibu, who was shocked by the reporter’s claim that all efforts to speak with him were not fruitful, charged newsmen to eschew pettiness and protect the nobility of journalism profession he holds dearly.

“To set the record straight, Garba said that the investigation lacks basis as there was no official press release showing that the Deputy Governor sponsored the indigent patients for eye surgery.”

Ibrahim noted that the only press release from his office was on July 10, 2023, stating that “Over 500 Benefit from KNSG Free Mobile Eye Screening in Gwarzo LGA.”
