ICPC tasks Kano online journalists on responsible reporting

Journalists under the auspices of the Association of Kano Online Journalists (ASKOJ) have been charged to join forces with institutions of the government to wage war against corruption in Nigeria.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) made the call at a training held recently in Kano for ASKOJ members.

Speaking at the session, ICPC Anti-Corruption Commissioner, Hassan Salihu, stressed the need for responsible use of online journalism to wage war against corruption.

Further, the premier anticorruption agency tasked online journalists in Kano to prioritise developmental reporting to strengthen the fight against corruption.

Salihu stressed that fighting corruption is a collective responsibility and a sacred duty for all Nigerian citizens.

He noted that online journalists play a significant role in raising public awareness about the dangers of corruption, which is hindering the country’s economic, political, and social progress.

The training, organised by the ASKOJ in collaboration with the ICPC, aimed to strengthen the relationship between online journalists and the ICPC. Kano Resident Commissioner of ICPC, Barrister Ibrahim Abubakar Kaugama, discussed the ICPC’s engagement with the media and provided an overview of the Commission’s achievements from 2019 to 2023.

ASKOJ Chairman, Yakubu Salisu, emphasised the importance of upholding journalistic ethics and the responsibility of the press to hold government accountable to the people.

The training was part of ongoing efforts to empower ASKOJ members with necessary information to enhance their professional competence and balance accountability with individual rights in news reporting.
